Testimonials
The experiences that have been presented below are the testimonials of those people who have seen death at close quarters but didn't let go of dear life. Though the scars remain, both physically and emotionally, they know that a safe windshield had or would have made all the difference.
Better Late Than Never
Farhiz could hardly appreciate the difference between tempered and laminated windshields till he had the chance to actually experience it. "I was ignorant but was fortunate," says Farhiz recalling the accident, which is quite vivid in his memory. It was a routine hurried drive from home to office in the morning. It was neither a stone nor a brick; it was a 21 year old young guy who splashed over the windshield running wildly to catch a bus. The incident happened at the busy Press Enclave Road sometime during March 1999. The divider on the road was covered with bushes so neither Farhiz nor the boy could see each other. The impact was immense. For a few seconds, Farhiz was all lost and couldn't actually figure out what had happened to him. His world was in darkness.
"Even the thought of not having a laminated windshield at the time of the accident causes a shiver in my spine," says Farhiz.
The young guy was thrown away and had severe head injuries. Of course, the injuries were much less than they would have been if the glass had shattered into pieces. The very thought of a person falling in his lap breaking the barrier of the windshield scares him to death.
Accidents Can Be A Shattering Experience
"I wish I was a little more informed," says Gopal Krishnan, Consumer Insights Director, Maadhyam Advertising.
Going back from his office, little did Gopal realize that the short drive would change the entire course of his life? It was neither speed nor rash driving that led to such a traumatic experience. It was sheer ignorance and some bad luck! While Gopal was waiting to take a right turn, a Maruti van coming from the opposite direction lost control and hit his stationary car.
The safety belt couldn't help much as the shattered glass pieces of the windshield covered his eyes and forehead. (Unfortunately, it was only after the accident Gopal realized that it was a tempered windshield). So serious was the injury that his right eye popped out. He had 350 odd stitches on his face and lost his right eye's vision. With bandaged eyes and bruised face, Gopal's life became stagnant for six long months. Recalling the agony and pain, Gopal has a message for all: "Ignorance is not always bliss especially when it can cost you your life."
Besides the mental trauma Gopal and his family members have undergone, there are also excessive recurring costs, which he will have to incur throughout his life. He spends Rs 1,000 per month on a periodical retina checkup for his left eye and RS 3,000 every six months to change his contact lenses for the right eye. (Just to make it more presentable and less frightening for the people). It has been over six years now but the impact still remains. Life has not been the same for Gopal since, 30th May 1994. He can't lift more than 15 kgs, no push-ups, no running.
Gopal is still fighting for a claim and still hasn't received a single penny from the concerned authorities.
A Narrow Escape
Improbable as it may seem, the front seat occupants of a car can depend on its windshield for safety. Mr. Rai, an even tempered, sober gentleman and a strict observer of traffic and safety rules realized the same but after committing a mistake.
It was just another fine day for Mr. Rai when he was driving his Maruti 1000 merely at a speed of 20 km/hr near Colony flyover. Suddenly his car was hit by an Ambassador, which had been hit by a bus. Mr. Rai was not wearing his safety belts and was also driving his car with a tempered windshield. The result: collision! Mr. Rai's face hit the windshield and the glass shattered on his face. Luckily, his spectacles saved his eyes from any damage and he was immediately rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. He received several stitches (which have left a prominent scar on his forehead) due to his negligence. By god's grace, Mr. Rai had a narrow escape.
Mr. Rai did not have an option of a laminated windshield as the accident took place in 1992. But even before it became mandatory, safety belt and laminated windshield have become a part of Mr. Rai's motoring life. He insists that all his family members also wear seat belts.
One could see from the above accident that even low speed can result in facial damage if one is not wearing seat belt and using laminated safety screen.
Precaution Is Better Than Cure
1st January 2000 was unfortunately not a pleasant and lucky day bubbly Avani Batra. The memories still send a shiver down her spine, and she doesn't even want to think about the traumatic experience. After watching a movie, Avani was on her way back home with one of her friends. It was a cold winter foggy night and the visibility was almost negligible. Taking all the necessary precautions, they chose to drive slowly.
After reaching Taj Man Singh roundabout, the car hit the divider and stopped with a jolt. Notwithstanding the great impact, Avani, who was sitting on the front seat, hit the windshield, as she was not wearing her safety belt. The windshield smashed and hit her face. Avani's face was damaged with severe facial injuries and blood squirt from her face while her friend on the driver's seat hit the roof and suffered dour cuts on his head. They were rushed to the hospital. Mercifully, Avani's eyes were saved from being fully marred, and the scar from the casualty still narrates the terrifying incident that took place on the New Year’s Eve.
Incidents like these cannot be completely ruled out but the impact can be lessened by using laminated windshields and safety belts to safeguard our lives.
