How Firecracker Smoke Can Reduce Night-Time Windshield Visibility

The festive season in India is a time for celebration and joy, when people eat to their heart’s content and burst crackers to mark the occasion. While these crackers look beautiful, they also produce a lot of smoke that can obscure your windshield clarity.

This temporary reduction in visibility can impair driving judgment, especially when driving at night. But how does firecracker smoke affect visibility, and does the windshield condition play a role? Let’s find out.

Why Windshield Condition Matters in Smoky Conditions

A car’s windshield often gets scratches and other blemishes throughout the course of its lifetime due to:

• Dirt and road oil film residue
• Exterior moisture and condensation
• Interior contamination due to humidity
• Small stones and other debris

These can reduce your visibility through the windshield in smoky conditions. Dirt and oil film residue increase nighttime glare and cause blurry vision, while exterior moisture can create a hazy look.

Similarly, interior humidity-induced contamination can make things look blurry or unclear, while small stones can cause cracks that distort light. You can fix most of these issues with proper cleaning, but consult a professional windshield glass repair service for the best results.

How Firecracker Smoke Affects Visibility

Reduced Visual Clarity

Firecracker smoke can reduce a car’s windshield clarity by leaving a layer of chemical residue. This is especially true for firecrackers made with heavy chemicals, which emit thick smoke.

The chemical residue can make it hard to see through the windshield and affect driving judgment.

Reduced Contrast

Firecracker smoke also reduces visual contrast because different chemicals produce different colours of light and smoke. This reduced contrast prevents drivers from clearly distinguishing the position and speed of vehicles, pedestrians and other road objects, which can lead to collisions.

Light Glare and Scattering

Firecracker smoke causes nighttime glare by scattering light excessively. Nighttime glare comes from the headlights of oncoming vehicles or the taillights of vehicles ahead.

The light scatters and enters through the windshield in a starburst pattern, making it difficult to judge distance to vehicles and pedestrians.

ADAS Camera Visual Obstruction

ADAS, or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, cameras provide constant visual feedback of the road and timely alerts when needed, such as Forward Collision Warnings (FCW) and Lane Departure Warnings (LDW).

Firecracker smoke affects these functions by obstructing the cameras’ visual feed, leading to incorrect or false alerts and on-road miscalculations.

How Drivers Can Improve Windshield Visibility

• Clean the inside and outside of the windshield thoroughly every week with OEM-approved windshield glass cleaners and a soft microfiber cloth.
• Avoid using harsh chemicals to prevent scratches.
• Use your wipers regularly as needed to keep the windshield clear of dirt and dust. If the wipers are worn, replace them promptly.
• When possible, avoid driving through heavily smoke-filled areas to prevent smoke film from forming.

Over To You

Windshield visibility is especially important during the festival season, when you may be driving at night, for a seamless driving experience. But because firecracker smoke can disrupt visibility, keeping your windshield clean matters.

You should also have your windshield professionally inspected regularly for scratches and other blemishes by a windshield repair and replacement service to prevent further deterioration of visibility.

At AIS Windshield Experts, our experts follow a thorough windshield inspection process to identify the gaps and offer quality repair and replacement services.
