When you need to be somewhere urgently and find that your car won’t start, what do you do? Do you call a mechanic, enter panic mode, or simply give up and take another transport option? In this scenario, having a few simple tricks up your sleeve could save you both money and time. Having your own vehicle means that you should be prepared for such a crisis as every machine malfunctions sometimes. Keeping a toolbox handy is one way to help yourself in this situation. However, some of these tricks can help you get your car started without any mechanical tools.
Usually, there are a few common causes if the engine doesn’t roar up, such as a dead battery, clogged fuel filter, defective switch, faulty starter, or an empty tank. A dead battery is the culprit in most cases, and hence, you might consider searching ‘best car battery in India,’ but that may not be the solution to your current problem.
So, what can you do when you're in a hurry, but the car won't budge? Read on to find out.
Simple Tricks to Help You Start Your Car
Try these easy tricks to start your car before you ring the mechanic, and if you're lucky, they might just be enough. Remember, this may not be a permanent fix but enough to get you out of a tricky spot.
Check if There is Power Loss
First, open the hood of your car and check for a power loss. Power loss could occur if you left headlights on for too long or there is some leakage which has drained the battery. See if the headlights are switching on or not, if they turn on brightly, then it is likely a bad starter or connection and not a weak battery. Next, ensure that all the cables are well connected and tightened.
Test the Car Battery
You will need a voltmeter for this one as you have to test the voltage in the battery. Turn on the voltmeter and touch the positive lead to the positive terminal and likewise, the negative lead to the negative terminal. A completely charged battery must read between 12.4 and 12.7 volts. If you don't know about the terminals or simply don't have a voltmeter, then leave this trick and move ahead.
Tap the Terminals
Check the battery terminals for any signs of corrosion and see if it is properly mounted or misshapen. Next thing to do is to tap and knock off the corrosion from the battery terminals. You can use your shoe for this trick and jar the terminals with the heel, enough to make contact better. Then try starting your car once again. If it doesn't help, then don't fret as we have a few more tips.
Tap the Fuel Tank
Another trick you can pull off simply with your shoe is to smack the fuel tank. Just smack the bottom of the fuel tank a few times with the heel of your shoe as it might help in jarring the fuel pump motor. After repeating this a few times, try starting the car.
Cycle the Key
Do you witness a clicking sound when you try to turn the key from the 'off' position to the 'start' position? If yes, then a basic trick called 'cycling the key' might help you turn on the engine. Just keep turning the key from 'off' to 'on' ten times and see if the engine roars up. This helps in warming up the terminals of the car battery, and sometimes it is just enough to start the car.
Unflood the Engine
Do you smell any gas? If yes, then chances are that the engine is flooded. In this case, press the accelerator pedal and hold it down while you crank up the engine. You can also open the hood of the car and let the fuel evaporate, but that would take much longer.
These were some simple yet useful tips to help you start your car. If your car still hasn't budged then its best to get some professional help.
